Zermatt is a wonderful, high resort that is situated at the foot of the magnificent Matterhorn in Switzerland. One of our favourite resorts in the world, it has everything on offer from fantastic skiing and boarding, amazing mountain views and a buzzing nightlife.
Zermatt was originally a mountain village that was developed into a winter resort. You arrive into Zermatt on the train from Tasch as cars are not allowed in so from your arrival in resort you know you are somewhere special. You will be met by electric or horse drawn taxis who will take you to your accommodation.
The village is made up of charming chalets and modern buildings kept in the traditional style. The main street is lined with luxury shops and boutiques and the charming older part of the village has narrow lanes and old buildings with slate roofs that take you back in time to the original mountain village. Ski chalets, hotels and apartments are all available to book for that perfect Zermatt ski holiday.
Zermatt is one of Europe’s top skiing and boarding destinations. It is one of the highest resorts so snow conditions are usually pretty good. The area is made up of 4 sectors and extends over to include Cervinia in Italy. Beginners will enjoy the wide open runs of the Sunnegga and Trokenersteg.
The slopes of Gornegrat are reached by the cog wheeled train and will be easily managed after a few lessons. Intermediates will just love the area as there is mile after mile of beautifully groomed runs to play on. There are scenic descents through the trees, long red runs and some good blacks to test your ability on. Head for the sector on the glacier and you are set at the foot of the glorious Matterhorn.
Make the trip to Cervinia and head into Italy for the day. Every good skier and boarder should experience Zermatt at least once in their lives. Try Trifti for one of the longest and most difficult mogul slopes or head up to the Matterhorn glacier. The off piste has a good variety of routes to suit all abilities. However, due to the nature of the terrain guidance is seriously essential as it is rocky and steep in places.
Cross country skiers will find a 4Km loop at Furi and 3Km of trails near the gondola to the Glacier. The Gravity Park is one of Switzerland’s best terrain parks. There is a super pipe, kickers, rails and a quarter pipe. There is also a wall ride and a mail box and tree jib.
