Known for its friendly staff and excellent food, the Hotel Serena Cortina is a great-value pick. It’s on the edge of the resort, which is ideal if you prefer peaceful evenings. But if you do fancy a night out, the main street is just a short stroll away. And getting to the slopes is hassle-free – just catch the public ski bus or hotel shuttle to the main lifts.

The hotel has a traditional look, from the bright green shutters to the frescoed walls. The authentic feel continues inside, with pinewood panelling lining the restaurant and a stone fireplace in the cosy lounge. Upstairs, the bright and simply furnished bedrooms are a comfy place to end the day – and some even have balconies where you can step outside to take in the mountain views.

As for the food, wake up to the smell of freshly baked croissants each morning, and fuel up for the day with a continental buffet breakfast. If you’re feeling peckish post-piste, you can grab a light bite from the hotel bar. And when dinner time rolls around, sit down for a five-course meal that mixes Mediterranean flavours with mountain dishes – think platters of cured meats and seafood risottos.

You won’t find many extra facilities here. Spend your off-slope hours relaxing with a drink in the lounge. Or if you fancy soothing your ski muscles, you can pay a little extra and book a slot to use the spa in the nearby Hotel Cristallo.

Beginners

Beginners should make a beeline for Cortina’s main Tofana area, where there are top-notch nursery slopes by the Socrepes lift station. And when you’re ready for more, you can hop on the lift to practise your new skills on the nearby network of greens and blues.

Intermediates

There are heaps or blues and reds to explore, many of them long and wide. The slopes tend to be quieter than elsewhere in the Dolomites too – perfect for laid-back cruising. Don’t miss the 9km Armentarola run from the peak of the Lagazuoi mountain towards the Alta Badia ski area. And for a ski day with a difference, you can follow the Gebirgsjägertour/Grande Guerra ski circuit, which takes in historical military sites from WWI.

Advanced

For the steepest terrain in Cortina, make tracks to the Cristallo-Faloria area. The north-facing slopes are criss-crossed with black runs where you can enjoy some high-speed turns. And over on the Tofane side of the resort, ride the lift to the Pomedes mountain hut to tick off the Downhill course from the 1956 Winter Olympics.

Snowboarding

With mainly gondolas and chairlifts, it’s easy for boarders to get around the area. Carve down wide, well-groomed slopes in the main Tofana part of the resort. Or if freestyle is your thing, hop on the Faloria cable car and hit the jumps, rails and boxes in the snow park.
