» Location
In the far W province of Vorarlberg, near the German border. 20 mls NW of St Anton. 68 mls W of Innsbruck and its airport. 125 mls E of Zurich (Switzerland) and its airport. 187 mls SW of Munich (Germany) and its airport.

» Position
Lies in a sunny valley, surrounded by the Lechtaler Alps. A fast mountain stream flows through the village.

» Description
Lech is recognised as one of the most picturesque alpine villages in Austria, its origins dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. It has developed into a well-established and internationally famous ski-resort the haunt of many royals. Stretching for 1 mls from N to S, it is set amid stunning high-alpine scenery with tremendous skiing, including the vast Arlberg ski-area. Not without reason is it referred to as the "diamond in the snow"! The neighbouring hamlet of Oberlech, with its scattering of hotels, is a pedestrian-only zone in winter, reached by cable car; a vibrant, buzzing service area for skiers during the day, it is sedate after dark.

An expensive resort, primarily geared to upmarket skiers; popular with royalty. Skiing suitable for all grades, with intermediates benefiting most from the wide variety of runs.

» Accommodation
Whole range available from 5-star right down to B&B, pensions and self-catering. Generally, hotels are of a very high standard; many have suites and most offer extra facilities. The majority of accommodation is situated close to a ski-lift and all are built in traditional style, priding themselves on offering traditional hospitality.

» Shopping
Exclusive boutiques and sports shops offering the latest designer ski-gear. Choice of supermarkets.

» Entertainment
Daytime: winter activities include alpine and cross-country skiing, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice-skating, curling, floodlit toboggan run, snowshoeing, nordic walking, winter walking (16 mls of cleared paths); paragliding, tennis and squash. In summer, hiking; golf driving range; outdoor swimming centre, set in the forest. Nightlife: sophisticated entertainment in a wide choice of bars and nightclubs.

» Eating
Numerous possibilities with the accent on quality, so consequently pricey.

» Public Transport
A ski-bus serves Lech, nearby villages and outlying hotels; free with a lift pass. A public bus serves villages and connects with fast trains on the main Zurich-to-Vienna line. Bus service between Lech and Zurich airport (Fri, Sat and Sun only); booked through the tourist office. Taxi rank in resort centre.

» Excursions
Limited, as Lech is very much a ski-resort. However, in summer there are excursions to Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany; local scenic tours are also on offer.

» Skiing Descsription
Lech has 11 drag-lifts, 18 chair-lifts and 5 cable cars, all easily accessible from the village; also easy access via the Rufikopf lifts to the huge Arlberg circuit with its 83 lifts. Arlberg Ski-Card lift pass incorporates resorts of Lech, Zurs, Stuben, St Christoph and St Anton. 3 ski-schools with 250 instructors cover Lech and Oberlech. Ski-kindergarten for children from 3 to 7 yrs; nonskiing kindergarten for children 3 to 6 yrs.

» Statistics
Village: 4,760 ft. Highest lifts: 7,750 ft. Good snow Nov to May. Approximately 50 well-positioned snow cannons ensure good conditions down to valley level until late in the season, whatever the weather. Over 70 mls of marked piste, with 5 black, 19 red and 25 blue runs, plus easy access to the vast Arlberg ski-area. Oberlech offers a variety of easy blue runs. Around 12 mls of cross-country trails. Fun Park for snowboarders.
