Kaprun, Austria

» Location
Centrally placed within the West Salzburg region. 6 mls south of Zell am See. 55 mls southwest of Salzburg city and its airport. 250 mls southwest of Vienna. 110 mls east of Innsbruck and its airport.

» Position
On mainly flat land, straddling the river at the foot of the mighty Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

» Description
Stretching 1 mls along the banks of the River Salzach, Kaprun was originally a farming village until at the turn of the last century it became well known for its highly rated mountain guides. Now it is a pleasant, typically Austrian mountain resort, quiet in comparison to its sister resort of Zell am See, with accommodation sprinkled throughout the village and the main hub of activity located in the area between the tourist information centre and Schloss-Strasse. It is probably best known for the year-round skiing offered by the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier which towers over the village.

» Suitable for
Fairly cosmopolitan clientele, with British and Germans making up the majority of visitors. Mainly middlemarket with wide range of appeal. Suits various levels of skiing expertise, but less choice for more advanced skiers. Also a popular summer destination.

» Accommodation
A wide variety from 4-star luxury hotels to B&B guesthouses and pensions as well as private apartments and 2 youth hostels. Many establishments are family owned and have been for generations.

» Shopping
All general requirements are well catered for with pharmacies, supermarkets and a fairly large shopping centre. Good selection of sports shops, providing ski-equipment (rent or buy) and outdoor wear. Some small designer jewellery and clothes shops. Nearby resort of Zell am See offers more serious shopping opportunities.

» Entertainment
Daytime: a wide range of winter-sports activities including snowboarding (2 fun parks with half-pipe), ice-skating, ice hockey, curling, tobogganing, sleigh rides; sports centre with indoor/outdoor pools and saunas; tennis; bowling; horse riding; squash; a few museums, including classic-car option and local heritage. In summer, golf and walking (many hiking trails start from the village). Nightlife: good selection of bars and discos/nightclubs, one of the more popular haunts being the Baum Bar; live music on offer ranges from traditional zither music to rock bands. Apres-ski continues in many places into the small hours. Also floodlit cross-country trails and tobogganing.

» Eating
Reasonable range of restaurants mostly based in the larger hotels with choice ranging from traditional cuisine and local specialities to Chinese, Italian/Greek and Mexican. A few coffee-shop options for snacks and cakes.

» Public Transport
A winter bus service connecting the resort centre to ski access points and Zell am See runs every 20 mins and is free with a valid ski-pass. In summer, there is only the main bus (operating 8am to 6pm) from/to Zell am See with its mainline railway links.

» Excursions
Limited in winter to exploring the surrounding area and Zell am See; Salzburg for shopping and sightseeing (full day). In summer, half day: Kitzsteinhorn glacier; reservoirs/dams of hydro-electric scheme above resort; Hohe Tauern National Park. Full day: Grossglockner high alpine pass; Krimml Waterfall; Innsbruck. Two days: Vienna; Venice; Liechtenstein.

» Skiing Descsription
Kaprun and the neighbouring resort of Zell am See form the "Europa Sport Region" which boasts 55 lifts, 27 of which are based in the Kaprun area (5 cable cars, 6 chair-lifts and 16 drag-lifts). The Lechnerberg and Schaufelberg drag-lifts are easily accessible from the village; the Maiskogel gondola and Gletscherjet cable car up Kitzsteinhorn are a short bus ride away. There are 6 ski-schools offering tuition and guidance for all levels, plus snowboarding and children's lessons. Ski-passes for less than 1 days are valid for village use only. Best value is the Europa Sport Region pass covering Zell and Kaprun; also available is the Super Salzburger pass covering many resorts in the Salzburg area including Obertauern, Schladming and Badgastein as well as the Europa Sport Region.

» Statistics
Village: 2,440 ft. Highest lifts: almost 10,000 ft. Glacier ensures good snow conditions virtually all year. Access to 81 mls of piste comprising 18 blue runs, 22 red and 9 black; cross-country skiers are well catered for with over 100 mls of trails.
